Five Tips for Treating a Cold Naturally

Are you still feeling the effects of cold and flu season? The following natural treatments might help. Disclaimer:

1. Herbal Supplements: Astragalus is an immune boosting herb known for its anti-viral effects. Try taking astragalus capsules preventively during flu season or at the first signs of feeling rundown. Sambucus (or elderberry) is a medicinal berry with an abundance of antioxidants. It can be purchased in many forms: syrup, lozenges, and even gummies. If taken at the onset of a cold or flu, it is said to mitigate symptoms and reduce the duration of your suffering.

2. Salt Water: Gargle with a half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of water 3-4 times a day. This will bring temporary sore throat relief by reducing swelling and getting rid of bacteria and irritants.

3. Mentholated Salve: Dab some organic menthol or eucalyptus oil under your nose to help with congestion. It’s dangerous to use over-the-counter decongestants for too long, so this serves as a natural alternative to help you breathe.

4. Steam Therapy: Steam can alleviate your sore throat and stuffy nose. A steam room would be ideal, but you can also steam the old-fashioned way. Put a towel over your head and (carefully) inhale steam from a bowl of boiling water.

5. Neti Pots: They aren’t as dreadful as they seem. Neti pots use warm saline water to clear your sinuses. It’s important to use distilled or sterile water (or boil tap water and let it cool) to kill any dangerous microorganisms. Watch a YouTube video to figure out the technique, as it takes some practice.
